Fr. Aidan Writes:
Most Sundays, we celebrate Mass focussed upon a season/event or a teaching/ miracle story from the life of Christ. As we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Trinity this Sunday, we are given the opportunity to reflect and worship on the very nature of God. God, by definition, is mystery and cannot be fully grasped. But we strive to understand; our faith seeking understanding. This is the heart of the adventure of our faith, getting closer to God. Union with God is the destiny of our faith journey. But how do we do this? How do we get to know anyone? It is through working at our relationship with that person individually and within the context of family, friends, colleagues, etc. This then begs another question about the quality of our relationships!
We have just celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, when the Church received the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The application of which helps us to know God through our response to his Holy Spirit. But how can we know we are on the right track? Galatians 5:22-23 tells us of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. When we exhibit these behaviors (which the Josephite Fathers sum up as “Douceur and Politesse”) in our relationships, we can then know we are getting closer to the mystery of the Holy Trinity because we are living and presenting the life of the Trinity to the world.
