Youth Group: The Anxiety Epidemic & Helping you handle Stress and Anxiety
Anxiety is so prevalent among young people today. In fact, the research shows that 1 out of every 5 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 has a diagnosable anxiety disorder. That means that the teens that suffer from anxiety have symptomology that is consistent with or at the level which therapist or psychologists will diagnose them with an anxiety disorder.
Just to put that in some perspective for you in 2006 the research that 1 out of 10 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 had an anxiety disorder.
In 10 years we doubled. Now 1 out of 5 have an anxiety disorder. So if we look around this room, most likely 1 out of 5 teens suffer from anxiety.
Teen will not use the word “anxiety”, they will use words like “I’m stressed” or “I’m overwhelmed” or “I’m worried”. These are all words that indicate anxiety. These are basically synonyms for anxiety.
So the questions is: What’s causing this?
So what we are going to do, is break this session into 2 parts, the first part we are going to talk about and have a discussion about answering that questions – What’s causing the anxiety epidemic amongst teens today? I wish this was simple, I wish it was one thing that causes stress. However, there are a lot, a lot of factors that contribute to the increase levels of anxiety, stress, and overwhelmed among teens today.
For this session, we don’t intend to go over all of them, but we are going to try to go over some of them, and I hope that you can mention a few in our discussion to help you understand and recognize those factors that bring anxiety.
